Grazing Cabbage

Botanical drawing of various brassicas.

Brassicas have been grazed in other parts of the world (New Zealand, Scotland, and Europe) in order to rest pastures as a practice for supplemental forage supply. The seeds themselves are roughly the same size as canola seeds.

Advantages

  • Some brassicas can be grazed multiple times in a season.
  • The large root system will add organic matter into the soil.
  • They will handle cool summer climates like those in western Canada.
  • They are highly digestible.
  • They are quick-growing and can be grazed 4 to 6 weeks after seeding.
  • Livestock will graze and consume the whole plant with no hesitation.
  • After the round-up, brassicas can be seeded into sod.
  • They like well-drained soils: PH range of 5.3 to 6.8.
  • 3 to 5 lbs per acre seeding rate, up to 60 lbs of N.
  • Price is $5.00 per lb. on average.

Disadvantages

  • Bloat can sometimes occur if not mixed with other annuals.
  • Weed control.
  • They dislike wet soils.
